Media Release – International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day 2025
Statement by the President of the Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association Mr. Savneel Sangeet Kumar on the occasion of International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day 2025

I am honoured to convey this message on behalf of the Fiji Mountaineering and Climbing Association as we commemorate International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day.
This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the historic first ascent of Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) by Sir Edmund Hillary and Shri Tenzing Norgay Sherpa—an achievement that remains one of the greatest triumphs of human endurance and perseverance.
Their remarkable journey was accomplished without the advantages of modern technology, high-performance gear, or prior knowledge of the extreme conditions at Sagarmatha’s upper reaches. Yet, Sir Hillary and Shri Norgay defied the odds, inspiring millions across the globe. Their legacy continues to ignite the dreams of future generations.
Fiji holds a special connection to Sir Hillary, who spent time here climbing the iconic Joske’s Thumb. His contributions to the local mountaineering community endure through the Fiji Rucksack Club, which he established and which remains active today.
The road to Everest’s summit was far from easy. Many attempted the feat before succeeding. Shri Norgay himself made six attempts before finally reaching the pinnacle.
Sir Hillary and Shri Norgay were members of the 9th British expedition when they achieved their historic ascent on May 29, 1953, at approximately 11:00 AM. Their accomplishment reshaped the world’s understanding of mountaineering and human potential.
Mountain climbing is not simply a race to the top—it is an introspective journey requiring immense dedication. Every step taken, every milestone reached, is a victory in itself and should be celebrated.
In Fiji, mountaineering is steadily growing as a popular sport, offering an accessible and affordable way to promote health, fitness, and a deep appreciation for nature. We encourage those venturing into the mountains to prioritize safety, respect mountain communities, and protect the environment by preventing pollution.
Finally, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all mountaineers who participated in this year’s summer expedition to Mount Sagarmatha (Everest) and wish them success in the upcoming winter expeditions. We also express our deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in pursuit of their mountaineering dreams.
Wishing you all a meaningful and inspiring Sagarmatha (Everest) Day.
May you continue to climb from peak to peak.
